A co-worker and I decided to take a trip up to LMF Friday night and fish all day Saturday and till about 2 on Sunday. All said, I think we caught 70-80 nice rainbows! It's hard to keep track when there is that much action. These weren't all stockers either. I think some were definitely carry overs, and some may have even been from a spawn. These were small without any "stumped" fin development that are typical for stockers. We seined the river early Saturday morning and found several size 14-12 mayfly nymphs, size 18 sowbugs and 18 or smaller scuds in various parts of the river. After seining and seeing what was in the river we noticed downstream there were fish actively feeding. We moved down and that's when the action started, non-stop!! The best fly was a nymph (flashback pheasant tail #12) and a sow bug pattern (#14). I even noticed some size 12 mayflies being taken on the surface and managed to catch a few on a #12 Adams dry fly. The Lost Creek area is really holding some nice sized fish. My buddy did well on a white streamer we like to call the "Lost Creek Special". Here is a picture of him after landing a nice rainbow.
I used my 2wt I just recently built and landed a nice rainbow about 14" long, maybe even bigger, on a pheasant tail nymph. Here is a picture of me fighting the fish. There is nothing better than catching a fish on a rod you built with a fly that you tied. Just above the Evening Hole on Saturday evening I missed two large rainbows that I couldn't land on my 2wt. Sunday was a little slower but we did very well below the Evening Hole bridge. Soft hackles (#12-14) and pheasant tail nymphs (#12-14) were the bugs of choice. I won't be able to make it back up to the LMF for some time now since the spring soccer season is getting under way (I am the coach) but if you get a chance, you really should try to make it up (or down) to the River. Spillway creek was the most crowded out of all the areas and we didn't even consider Zone #2 or #3 due to all the generation that has been going on lately.
